How are Subscribers Segmented?

LISTS are used as a targeting tool that can help you categorise subscribers when sending a newsletter to a specific target audience.

Subscribers/contacts can be associated with one or more lists in different ways;

  • Subscribers can choose a list (or a number of lists) straight from the subscription form, if one or more lists are configured then they will be shown during the subscription. NOTE that those lists must be set as 'Public'.

  • You can add subscribers manually, or import contacts from a .CSV file, and such contacts can be assigned to one or multiple lists (selected lists can be public or private).

  • Automatically, by subscribing from your website. Manual setup of the form is required.

ePaper divides lists into 2 macro categories - Private and Public lists

 Public Lists
 Private Lists
Public lists allow users to control their preferences by selecting on which list they want to be subscribed either from the subscription form or by updating their personal profile (Profile page).
Private lists provide you with full control of the subscribers’ choices, since only you will be able to add or remove contacts from that list. This type of list can be used as your internal classification method and for targeting your newsletters to a specific group of contacts.

With public lists you can invent many combinations, for example:

  • Force the activation of a public list during subscription but make it editable on the Profile page;

  • Show lists during the subscription process so the user can select lists of their interest, thus being added to multiple lists;

  • Setting lists modifiable only on the subscriber's Profile page to make the subscription form simpler and show the profile editing form on the welcome page, just after the subscribers confirm their subscription you can invite them to modify their preferences.

Additional notes:

  • Another option which is between Public and Private list is known to be "Hidden Lists", here you can create a public list but decide not to show it on the subscription forms or in the user’s profile.
  • Once you create a contact list - add yourself as Test Contact and assign it to each list.

  • To save a .csv file with contacts in UTF-8 encoding format, please follow these settings:  Save as > coma delimited (csv) > Tools (usually at the bottom right of save window) > Web Options > Encoding > Unicode UTF-8

Retargeting. Lists can be used for retargeting of your newsletters based on statistics of previous newsletters you already sent out.  From the newsletter statistics screen you can easily select a subset of targeted subscribers who opened or clicked your newsletter and put them in a temporary list to send a follow up email only to the users who have engaged with your newsletter.
